Why You Should Know the Road Cycling Handbook

By James Baxendale on 03 July 2026

Now that we’re halfway through the 2026 season, you’ve likely seen the Road Cycling Handbook 2026 mentioned at registration tables or in pre-race briefings. While it might seem like just another dry document, it’s actually the "rules of the road" that keep our local racing scene spinning. Think of it as the invisible framework that ensures when you line up at 6:00 AM, the race is fair, the officials are qualified, and, most importantly, everyone gets home safely.

The reason it’s so important to be familiar with this guide is that it doesn't just govern the elite pros; it binds every person involved in the sport. Whether you are a rider pushing for a podium, a race organizer planning a local classic, or a technical official making the tough calls, these regulations are there to protect you. The Cycling SA Road Commission’s primary goal is to promote and manage a safe environment, and this handbook is how they do it.

One of the most helpful things to understand is how many different key roles it takes to pull off a safe race. For instance, the handbook outlines strict standards for Technical Officials, like Commissaires and timekeepers, who must be licensed and trained to ensure results are accurate. It also covers Team Managers, who are the only ones permitted to drive support vehicles in a race convoy—and even then, only if they have the proper license. Even the support staff, like mechanics and soigneurs, fall under these rules to ensure professionalism across the board.

Beyond the roles, the handbook is packed with practical facts that can make or break your race day:

  • Licensing is Key: If you’re eyeing a trophy or prize money, you need to know that a Day Membership won’t cut it. To be eligible for prizes or national selection, you must hold a Full Racing License.
  • Safety Specs: Small technicalities can lead to big headaches. For example, your handlebars must be plugged, and for mass-start races, there’s now a 65mm limit on wheel rim depth (and only 50mm for the kids) to help with safety during crosswinds.
  • A Major Change: One of the most rider-friendly updates for 2026 is that gear checks have been officially removed for all age groups, which is a huge relief for youth riders and parents who used to spend hours worrying about gear ratios.
  • E-Bike Clarity: With the rise of tech, the handbook now clearly defines E-Road bikes. They are welcome in their own specific categories, but using one in a standard race will result in a disqualification and a fine.

At the end of the day, being "in the know" about the Road Cycling Handbook means you can spend less time worrying about technicalities and more time focusing on the ride. It’s the foundation of our South African cycling community, ensuring that every time we clip in, we’re part of a professional, organized, and safe sport. Have a great rest of the season, and we'll see you on the road!
