Running for Purpose: Celebrating South African Heritage, Inclusivity, and Community
By James Baxendale on 21 August 2026
When we think of Heritage Day, our minds immediately go to the sights, sounds, and smells of a classic South African braai. However, the heart of September 24th runs much deeper. It is a dedicated time to celebrate the beautiful, complex tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions that make us unique. But what does heritage look like when you lace up your running shoes?
Across the country, local athletics clubs and passionate race directors use this month to channel our nation's collective energy toward something greater. By participating in heritage-themed races, we get to express our pride while actively uplifting those around us. This edition of our guide is dedicated to you, the proud South African runner, and the incredible organizations hosting events that champion charity, inclusivity, and community support. Here are five fantastic events to look out for as we head into September.
Spring, Charity, and Community in the Cape
Kicking off the month on September 5th is the Food Lover's Market Tekkie Challenge. ( https://www.racespace.co.za/race/7262-food-lovers-market-tekkie-challenge )Hosted at the Jan Kriel School in Kuilsrivier, this event is all about heralding the start of spring while making a tangible difference. The fun, family-oriented race offers 5km, 10km, and 16km distances. Most importantly, it is a dedicated charity event organized to aid children with special educational needs, allowing you to turn your morning miles into direct support for children living with learning disabilities.
Stepping Into Silence for a Decade of Impact
If you are in Gauteng, September 13th marks a profound milestone: the 10th Annual #SilentWalkAndRun ( https://www.racespace.co.za/race/7169-10th-annual-silentwalkandrun )at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. September is Deaf Awareness Month, and this powerful event invites the hearing community to step into the "world of silence". By participating without sound, runners and walkers gain empathy and a deeper understanding of the daily realities faced by the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Led by the Neema Foundation for the Deaf, this year's theme is "Shine a Blue Light on Sign Languages". The event also serves as a crucial platform to raise funds and awareness in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). It’s an opportunity to walk in silence, stand for inclusion, and be part of a decade-long movement.
The True Spirit of Ubuntu on the Coast
On Heritage Day itself (September 24th), Durbanites will gather at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium for the Ntenga Foundation Charity Race. ( https://www.racespace.co.za/race/7124-ntenga-foundation-charity-race ) This event is a massive social highlight on the city's calendar, drawing families from all walks of life to celebrate our Rainbow Nation. Beyond the fitness and entertainment, the race carries a life-changing mission: all proceeds go directly toward providing clean water to communities in need. Every step taken on this fast coastal route contributes to restoring dignity and improving health for those who need it most.
Running As One in the Mother City
Also taking place on September 24th is the 9th annual Nantes Heritage Race – Run As One. ( https://www.racespace.co.za/race/7188-run-as-one ) Powered by the Nantes Athletics Club, this event brings a vibrant energy to the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. True to its name, "Run As One" is built around unity, offering a fast, flat, and fun course that welcomes both competitive runners chasing personal bests and families looking for a festive outing. It’s a wonderful celebration of Cape Town’s diverse communities coming together through shared health and a great vibe.
Keeping the Celebration Going
As the Heritage Day long weekend wraps up, the spirit of togetherness continues on September 27th with the Heritage Day Race ( https://webqa.racespace.co.za/race/7034-heritage-day-race ) in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng. Hosted at the South East Boulevard Shopping Centre, this community-centered event offers 5km, 10km, and 21.1km distances on a flat and fast course. It perfectly encapsulates the month's theme by offering a festive environment with a strong community spirit, celebrating our nation's diversity, wellness, and togetherness right through to the end of September.
