The Footprints Ultra is a 360-kilometer, self-supported ultra-distance team relay across South Africa’s Western Cape. Tracing an epic journey from the quiet, starlit Karoo town of Sutherland all the way down to the Atlantic coastline at Melkbosstrand, the event has quickly established itself as one of the most compelling team endurance challenges in the region.

Born out of a desire to create a true adventure relay in South Africa, the Footprints Ultra was designed to bridge two contrasting worlds: the vast, arid stillness of the Karoo and the ocean edge. Unlike traditional road races focused purely on personal bests, Footprints was created to test team dynamics, strategy, and resilience over extreme distance.

The structure of the race is simple in concept, yet demanding in execution. Each team consists of six runners and one dedicated support vehicle, with only one athlete running at a single time. While one runner tackles a leg, the remaining five teammates travel ahead in the vehicle to navigate, prep nutrition, and set up the next handover point. Teams handle all their own logistics, managing driver shifts, leg rotations, vehicle fuel, and nocturnal navigation across remote backroads. Starting in Sutherland, teams run around the clock through day and night, managing fatigue and shifting temperatures until the entire team reaches the beach at Melkbosstrand together.

For most participants, the appeal lies in the rare blend of shared hardship and camaraderie. Running long distances alone can be isolated, but sharing a 360-kilometer journey inside a support vehicle creates intense bonds.
